Why I'm Failing My Own Goals (And What I'm Doing About It)

Sometimes the best advice comes from admitting when you're not following it yourself.

Setting long term goals is essential for anyone who is committed to self-improvement.

I really began to realise this in my senior year of high school. I set myself the crazy goal of getting straight A’s on my final exams.

Although I was working hard every day and making sacrifices, my motivation never failed me.

I pulled through, delivered at the exams, and picked up my straight A’s grade report at graduation.

Without having set that ambitious goal, I don’t think I could have triumphed over my procrastinating tendencies and I would have spent much more time on social media or gaming.

You want to hear the truth, though? As humans, we’re awful at predicting the future. At getshitdone, we aren’t here to flaunt our wins. We also share our losses.

This year, unlike in high school, I have been spectacularly failing the goals I set myself for my agency, Fluence.

5k cashflow in May? It was 1300€.

4 new Clients in Q2? We got 3.

3 Functioning Client Funnels? We barely have a single one running.

3 Digital Product Bundles in Q2 → not a single one was built.

How am I planning to get out of this rut of mine? By focusing on actually following my own advice. Instead of trying out a million things, dipping my toes into this and that, I have found that I need to sit down and actually do the things that have the highest impact.

How do I get those clients this quarter? By calling them. The more calls I make, the more clients I get. It’s that simple. How do I increase my cashflow? By selling more and signing more retainers.

Ask yourself: what is it that you know you should be doing, but you aren’t? Often, its the boring, repetitive stuff that brings real results. Make sure you get all of that out of the way before you do anything else. Focus on the activities that are most in line with your goals.

I want to share one closing thought with you. Enjoy the process. It might not always be easy. But don’t fall into the trap of saying “I will be happy when ____ happens.” Find joy in the path, not in the destination. Life is about the journey.
